Affiliate Agreements and Liability Insurance Information

Liability Insurance

The purpose of Liability insurance is to cover students in the event that they are named in a claim.

There is liability insurance available for our students while they are engaged in health care clinical education activities in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Affiliate Agreements with outside institutions are required because only then is this liability insurance activated while you are away from the Stony Brook system. The insurance offers coverage in the amounts of $1 million per incident and $3 million aggregate per incident.

Sites that already have an Affiliate Agreement are listed below under "Institutions" and "Private Practices".

Students who choose to rotate at sites outside of Canada, the United States, or Puerto Rico have the following options:

General Info

The following sites have affiliate agreements with SUNY Stony Brook that enable medical students to be covered by liability insurance while at rotations at these sites. If the site you wish to go to does not appear on this list, you should complete a request for an affiliate agreement and submit it to Jeanine in the Office of Student Affairs for review. When your request is reviewed, someone in the the Office of Student Affairs will get back to you regarding how you should proceed and whether the agreement will be pursued. Do not assume that a site is covered just because it is affiliated with one that is listed here. When you request that an affiliate agreement be initiated, please be sure that all information on your request form is complete. We recommend a lead time of 4 months for requesting a new agreement. Occasionally, a site that is listed here will wish to renegotiate the agreement. If that happens, the Office of Student Affairs will notify you if the process affects your elective time period.
